Objectives: March 24 to March 29, 2009

Not really that changed from last week’s, so you may check that link if you forgot what they were. :) The main change is that now I have a weight goal: 80 kg or less, by next Sunday. Which means losing 1.4 kg – not that much, but I can’t slack off either.

I’ll have to keep paying special attention to what I eat; whenever I get distracted, my two bad habits come to the fore: too much food in the plate, and eating everything on it, even if I feel satisfied before. What I leave in the plate doesn’t help any starving children whether I eat it or not, and there’s no point in eating more than I really need.

I absolutely agree with you and praise you for saying that: What one leaves in the plate doesn’t help any starving children whether one eats it or not.
That theory is just plain stupid and nonsense and causes people to overeat even when they really don’t feel like it.

You seem obsessed with your weight which is, as far as I’m concerned, the wrong approach for losing weight. Besides weighing yourself regularly you should keep a record of the centimetres you lose (waist, arms, legs, for example).

Another good tip about diets and nutrition is variety. If you’re consuming less calories than usual you should really eat a wider variety of foods so that you won’t get tired or bored of what you eat.

I have to agree with Velvetsatine, in fact I had been thinking of telling you that. You are doing this not because you want to lose weight for a particular reason but because you want to lead a healthier life, right? If you keep at it with the salad, you will soon get tired of it and believe you me, such a strict aproach to anything in your life will soon make you grow tired of it and it will be difficult to maintain.

Listen, another thing which I’ve been waiting for (in order to add my two pennies, but of course) is going beyond the diet and the exercise, internal change as well. Or are you not at that stage yet? Let us know me luvvie and take care will you? Health tip: pára de chagar os religiosos convictos, tu queres é luta ;)

      • Girls,

first, “obsessed” is an un-nice word to say. “Overly focused” would have been much, much nicer. :)

Weight loss is not my goal (in physical terms), but it’s a good, simple, easy way to measure progress towards it. I like to be able to quantify challenges; if not, everything becomes subjective.

As for diets and ways of, there are a lot of them I intend to try out. I’m a geek, so performing experminents comes naturally; accepting things on faith doesn’t. :) Indeed, much of the point of this blog is to share with readers the results of those experiments. Trying breakfast for a week (later extended to two) was just the first; next month’s promises to be more interesting.

About improving other parts of me, well, just click on the categories on the left to see what I have to say about that. :) I admit that I’m starting with the exercise / diet / weight stuff, because it’s simpler and easier to measure, although that should “spill” into other parts of my life. For instance, exercising and dieting also means you’re exercising your self-discipline, and actively trying to improve yourself, and I’ve already noticed that other parts of my life have been positively affected. Still, this is only the beginning, obviously.

Pedro, I don’t think you should be that defensive, you don’t need to justify yourself to us, at the end of the day you’re doing this for yourself and therefore you’ll only be justifying yourself to self. Obsessed may not be a good word in your book, but perhaps it’s the notion we get from your entries? Just a thought. Anyway, ignore any negative feelings you might’ve had from that and focus on our message: dieting is impossible to keep as a long term goal, focus on becoming healthier, I suppose that’s the message.

Just think of us as holding up a mirror to you, will ya? Holding up a mirror to what you proposed to do, of how you’re going about it, of your development and your goals. I don’t think anyone would like to bring others down, I speak for myself when I say that I’m urging you to continue and grow as a person, because I share some of the same problems, even if under different circumstances, we’re all human after all and would like to learn how others deal with it. Moreover, because sometimes it’s like watching myself donkey years ago and I’m waiting for you to start on the path yourself so I can point you in the right direction, I’d like to share the little insight and wisdom I’ve gained thus far in my life. Why? I like sharing knowledge, helping others grow into their own skin and because I like you and have sometimes got frustrated at you, cos despite being a really intelligent bloke, you can be as thick and as stubborn as a mule, closed within your own little circle of thought. I’d like to see you break through that and grow outwards, perhaps into another circle of thought, but a larger one at that, which you would then break through once again, over and over.

Remember, this blog was to be devoid of ego and if you’re willing to come out (so to say, lol), then you ought not to dismiss any advice you’re given.

          Beijinhos ;)

(note to self, mygod, how much easier it is to write in english!)

          • Sara,

you took my reply far too seriously. And me thinking it had the smilies in all the right places… :) I wasn’t offended by anything Velvetsatine or you said; yes, “obsessed” is not a nice word (an obsession is something unhealthy), but I can perfectly understand that my posts sound as if my only goal is to decrease that value known as “weight”. I think I explained in my previous comment that I’m doing that thing (measuring it, and having a value as a goal) mostly for fun, what with being a geek and everything. That’s not the real purpose of this blog; heck, even mere physical health isn’t the whole goal (though it’s a part of it).

Don’t worry; I know you’re my friend and are only trying to help, and I read and appreciate all your comments. And sometimes I learn from them even when I disagree, because they get me thinking.
